Researchers and practice partners

Overview:
The tool aims to support holistic thinking about ethics across all research stages and related participation activities. We recognise that research projects will usually be subject to external ethical scrutiny during project design – usually through University Research Ethics Committees or the equivalent. However, ethics is an ongoing concern that impacts every stage of the research process and should be subject to ongoing reflection and review. We also recognise that ethical considerations aligned to participatory research practices may not be considered within standard ethics review processes. Our checklist uses
Houghton (2015) ethical framework as a starting point for specific questions to consider in participatory research with children and young people addressing domestic abuse.
Key strengths:
This tool supports consideration of a wide range of ethical issues, from children and young people’s engagement through to project dissemination.
Key challenges:
Ethical issues within participatory research projects are dynamic and context specific. This means that no list of questions will be exhaustive and therefore these questions are a starting point to support a reflective culture. The topic of domestic abuse may add an additional level of consideration, which will require input from specialist service providers to support ethical planning and decision making.
