Criminal Justice Responses
We focused on innovation within the criminal legal system, drawing on examples of policing practice (through examining the operation of a specific police notification system in one police force area), support for children who want to be involved in the process of Domestic Homicide Reviews (DHRs), and court advocacy support for victims/survivors in their journey through the court process. The relationship between criminal justice interventions and other services provided an opportunity to examine how multi-agency and collaborative working could potentially make a difference to the lives of children and families affected by domestic abuse, and explored whether this happened in practice. Innovations were examined to identify any improvements that resulted from the interconnections between social care, policing and criminal justice responses to domestic abuse in relation to children. Here we focused on how innovations can be introduced and sustained within the organisational structures of the law and criminal justice practice. This involved collaborative working with local authorities, domestic abuse and children’s sector organisations, police and criminal justice organisations.
