Who is it for?
Researchers, participants and the research audience
Overview:
Following discussions about best to involve women and children ethically, safely and meaningfully in knowledge exchange for the CAFADA project, we chose to develop a series of short edited audio clips. This provided a means of having ‘direct voices’ from those who had taken part in the project and had experience of the social care innovations the project sought to learn about. It also provided the benefit of developing outputs that (with participants’ consent) might serve multiple ‘knowledge exchange’ activities (training, parliamentary events, conferences, toolkit, website).  In CAFADA we worked with a professional audio producer to develop our ‘mini-podcast’ project. We invited children, young people, women and practitioners who had taken part in CAFADA participation activities to speak about their experiences, reflect on findings and share the issues that mattered to them. A young expert advisor coordinated the podcast with us, you can listen to the podcasts below.

Key strengths:
With the support of an audio producer, audio clips were relatively quick and easy to make. Recording could take place remotely or face to face, offering a degree of flexibility for participants and enabling inclusion of those who lived across the UK. A degree of excitement was generated among some young participants about being recorded and using professional recording equipment. Participants could maintain a sense of control by listening back to recordings and carefully considering if, how and where they would be happy for them to be used.

Key challenges:
Although all participants used a pseudonym for their recordings and had the option to have the voice ‘pitch shifted’, we were also conscious that participation in any form of ‘media’ recording, or public presentation, relating to an experience of domestic abuse (or using related services) brings potential risks and vulnerabilities. We addressed this by developing conversation guides to help participants think carefully about their involvement, identify any risks and make choices about participation that were as fully informed choices as possible. We also provided a menu of options about where and how recordings could be used – ranging from use within ‘closed settings’ such as training or conferences, to more open use on a project website.

Listen here for the perspectives of A, a wonderful adult expert advisor to the CAFADA project, who joined our lovely, insightful women’s advisory group to co-develop measures at the beginning, kept in touch to make sure they were useful to women and children, then reflected eloquently on her experience in this wonderful podcast.

SPACE:

Now we have three wonderful young people (RJ, RH and K) from the SPACE project, who speak so brilliantly about the service and being involved in the CAFADA project. They and their fabulous group of young people in SPACE also produced films, poetry and took part in awe inspiring events – have a look at the ‘recovery interventions’ web page too to hear all about SPACE.
